Canard Breaks Through with Inaugural 250 Class Win

BUCHANAN, Mich. (July 3, 2010) - The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship reached the halfway point on Saturday with the Rockstar Energy RedBud National, round six of the 12-race season. The Independence Day tradition from Southern Michigan played host to thousands of the most enthusiastic fans in the country who watched Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., race to his fifth consecutive victory in the 450 Class. GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., captured his first career victory in the 250 Class.

Dungey's run to the win wasn't without its challenges. Despite going 1-1 in the motos for the third time this season, the premier class rookie was forced to battle through several challenges from his rivals. However, in the end, he proved resilient and came out on top at the conclusion of both motos. His pair of triumphs gives him eight wins over the last 10 motos and a significant lead in the championship standings.

"I think the championship is what we're going for overall in the end," said Dungey. "There's still a lot of racing left. I just need to be on top of my game every single moto. Today was really competitive. Chad (Reed) and Ben (Townley) were right there so I had to really dig deep. The fans are great out here. They're what it's all about at RedBud. They just make everything really enjoyable."

After a rough outing one week ago, reigning champion and Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Chad Reed, of Australia, rebounded to take second overall (2-2) while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda's Ben Townley, of New Zealand, finished third (4-3) for his second straight podium finish.

Dungey now holds a 64-point advantage heading into the second off-week of the season, leading the most laps in the class at 77 and holding the best average finish of 2.4.

Just one week after Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel, of France, became the first multiple overall winner in the 250 Class, Canard became the fifth different rider to stand atop the podium in 2010. Additionally, he became the fourth first-time winner in the smaller displacement thanks to a solid fourth place effort in Moto 1 that he followed up with his first career moto win in Moto 2.

"(This win) has been 3 years (coming)," said Canard. "To be here and win is amazing, especially at RedBud in front of these fans. It's just awesome. I didn't want to have to make a hard pass on Dean (Wilson) for the win, but I really wanted it. These (motocross races) haven't been easy for me in the past. I wanted to get it done and I wanted to get it done today."

250 Class rookie and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Dean Wilson, of Scotland, grabbed the runner-up spot (3-2) with his teammate Pourcel, winner of the first moto, rounding out the podium in third (1-5).

Pourcel's advantage over Wilson in the championship standings sits at 33 points. The Frenchman also leads the class in laps led with 87 and average finish at 2.5.

The MotorcycleUSA.com Women's Motocross Championship competed in its inaugural event from the legendary RedBud facility with the Rockwell Watches National, round four of eight. After a tough start to the season, Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., swept the day's motos to capture her first win of 2010. WMX Class points leader Jessica Patteron, of Tallahassee, Fla., finished second (2-2) for DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda's Tarah Gieger, of Winter Garden, Fla., finished third (3-3). All three overall podium finishers received customized Rockwell watches. To check out the entire lineup of Rockwell Watches, log onto www.RockwellTime.com.

After a weekend off, the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship returns to action with the Rockstar Energy Spring Creek National from Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, Minn., on July 17.

Pourcel Becomes First Repeat Winner in 250 Class

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (June 26, 2010) - The fifth round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship translated into a exceptional day of racing under threatening skies and a jam-packed hillside of exuberant Colorado fans for the Toyota Trucks Thunder Valley National from Thunder Valley Motocross Park. Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., extended his 450 Class points lead with his fourth consecutive overall victory while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel, of France, also added to his championship advantage with his second overall win.

Since round two of the 2010 season, Dungey has been on a mission, showing his peers that despite being a rookie, he is more than ready to lead the way in the title fight. On Saturday, he maintained the form that has put him in the drivers seat early on, securing a runner-up effort in Moto 1 and going on to win his sixth of the last eight motos in the final race of the day.

"I've been fortunate to win some races (this year)," said Dungey. "I just want to keep it up and win as many races as possible. I didn't know what to expect (coming into the season), so I came in with an open mind. Hangtown wasn't what I expected, there just wasn't enough time. But I put it behind me and we're moving forward. They let the track go today and it got rough which was cool. It made for some great racing."

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda's Ben Townley, of New Zealand, posted his best finish of the season, grabbing the runner-up spot (6-2) while GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe, of Australia, finished third (4-4) and assumed the runner-up position in the season standings. Defending champion Chad Reed, of Australia, finished ninth (10-7) and fell from second to third in the points.

Dungey now holds a 51-point advantage heading into the halfway point of the season, leading the most laps in the class at 62 and holding the best average finish of 2.7.

Through the first four rounds, the 250 Class had seen four different riders stand atop the overall podium. However, Pourcel ended that at Thunder Valley, going 1-1 on the day to take a convincing win.

"My race went good," said Pourcel. "I won both motos and had some good starts so it was a pretty good day. I'm surprised (with the competition). You never know who will be out there. But it's been great and I've been riding good. All you can do is ride your best. I'm trying to do my best for the fans and give them my best on the podium."

After five rounds, Pourcel is the only rider in the class with more than one moto victory and has found his way to the top of the podium for at least one moto at each stop. GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., captured second overall (3-2), while last week's winner and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Dean Wilson, of Scotland, rounded out the podium in third (2-3).

Pourcel moves into a 34-point lead over Wilson in the standings and leads the class in laps led with 72 and average finish at 2.4.

The MotorcycleUSA.com Women's Motocross Championship returned to action at Thunder Valley with the Able Planet National, round three of the 2010 season. DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha's Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., remained perfect through three races, sweeping the day's moto's en route to the overall. Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., finished second (5-2) while Monster Energy Kawasaki's Sara Price, of Canyon Lake, Calif., finished third (2-6).

The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship continues next weekend from Buchanan, Mich., for round six and the Rockstar Energy RedBud National from RedBud on July 3.

GEICO Powersports Honda

Brett Metcalfe has been one of the most consistent riders in the premier class, putting together an impressive rookie 450 Class campaign to this point. At Budds Creek he ran among the top contenders in both motos before going 6-6 and finishing the round sixth overall. Despite dropping to third in the standings, he still sits just four points behind Reed for that runner-up position.

Jagermeister KTM

Mike Alessi returned to the podium last weekend in Budds Creek when he finished second in the opening moto. In Moto 2, he wasn't able to maintain the momentum and fell back to a 12th-place effort. As a result, he finished fifth overall but still holds on to the fourth spot in the standings. Last season at Colorado, he attempted to return from a devastating knee injury only to find more trouble. He will be looking for much better luck on Saturday and the chance to turn his season around.

Honda Red Bull Racing

Andrew Short made a long awaited return to the top of the podium last weekend, taking the win in Moto 1. Despite missing an entire moto at Freestone, he has been exceptionally strong, sitting fifth in the standings. He returns to his hometown race this weekend and is eager to continue his stellar riding that has brought him a pair of runner-up efforts the past two weeks and perhaps grab his first career victory in front of family and friends.

"It's awesome to win again," said Short. "The last time I won a moto was at the Colorado motocross  race in 2007 so this has been a long time coming. I can't wait to be on home soil this week and race in front of my Colorado home crowd. I'm feeling really motivated so it should be a lot of fun."

Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR

Josh Grant put forth a solid effort at Budds Creek last weekend, finishing fourth overall with fifth and fourth place results. Last season at Thunder Valley, Grant went 5-5 on the evening and finished sixth overall.

In just his second race of the 2010 season, Justin Brayton improved with a 10th overall at Budds Creek and continues to get stronger as the season goes on.

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda

The bad luck that has characterized a significant portion of Ben Townley's 2010 season returned at Budds Creek. The New Zealand native was running at the front of the field in Moto 1, only to encounter an issue with his motorcycle . He bounced back effectively in Moto 2 to salvage an eighth-place result.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki

Similar to Townley, Tommy Hahn's strong riding hasn't translated into accurate results for the Texas native. A tough weekend overall for the Suzuki rider resulted in a 17th place finish at Budds Creek, but he still secures the 10th spot in the standings.

The exceptional rookie season for Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey continued last weekend at the MotoTees.com Budds Creek National as the 2010 AMA Supercross champion captured his third consecutive overall victory in Southern Maryland to extend his early season points lead. This weekend, round five of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship commences with the Toyota Trucks Thunder Valley National from Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Lakewood, Colo. Dungey, along with rookie 250 Class competitor and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Dean Wilson, who became the fourth different overall winner in the class last weekend, enter the Mile High City with the momentum from a pair of stellar performances. The world's best attack one of the most visually stunning facilities on Saturday, June 26.

450 Class

Rockstar/Makita Suzuki

Since coming slow out of the gates to kick-off the 2010 season, Dungey and the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki squad have been virtually unstoppable. Dungey's third place finish in the opening moto at Budds Creek was his first non-moto win in four motos, but he bounced back in the final moto to re-assert himself at the front of the field and take his fifth win in the last six motos. He currently sits 36 points ahead of Chad Reed and doesn't appear to be slowing down.

"Budds Creek was a good weekend for me and for the team that's for sure," said Dungey. "The bike has been set up perfectly the last three weeks and it is really paying off in our results. Moto 2 the bike kept getting better as the track kept getting rougher. Goose and the rest of the team have really put in their homework back in California. The bikes been good off the starts, in the rough stuff and especially the cornering. I crashed in the first moto and I don't really know what happened. The next thing I know I was on the ground. I had to rip off my goggles and go at it without them after that. I got roosted a couple times pretty good once I got up to second place so I'm pretty lucky I didn't take a rock to the eye or anything worse. We made up for it in Moto 2 and got our third overall in a row. We will go back to work this week and show up in Colorado looking to keep it going."

Matt Moss continues to improve in his first season on American soil and picked up his best effort of 2010 with a 16th-place finish last weekend. However, he is looking for more.

"This weekend was OK for me, but I wasn't very happy with my starts and my position overall," said Moss. "It seemed that I was struggling to get where I was. This weekend in Colorado, I'm going there to get top 10 and nothing else! I know I can do it, I just have to get it done. I'm really looking forward to Thunder Valley."

Monster Energy Kawasaki

Monster Energy Kawasaki heads to Thunder Valley ready to stay on the podium with Chad Reed. After suffering from his worst career finish just two weeks ago, the Australian rider and reigning 450 Class champion finished third overall last weekend and is excited to head to the Denver area for this week's event. His rebound effort last week helped return him to second in the championship.

"Thunder Valley is a good track," said Reed. "We keep making improvements on my bike and it's getting better every week. Since the race is in the daytime this year, the heat is going to play a factor, but that is good for me."

Nick Wey is also ready for Thunder Valley. After working too hard during the week before Budds Creek, Wey has lightened his training program to make sure he is at his best on Saturday.

"I think I overdid it in the Florida heat last week," said Wey. "I hadn't trained in the summer down there and I kind of wore myself out. This week I'm still going to work, but I'm going to make sure I don't over do it."

Dungey Extends Winning Streak to Three with Victory at Budds Creek

Rookie Dean Wilson Breaks Through for First Career 250 Class Win

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (June 19, 2010) - Round four of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship made its annual visit to Southern Maryland on Saturday in front of thousands of energetic fans for the MotoTees.com Budds Creek National from Budds Creek Motocross Park. A full day of intense bar-to-bar action from the world's fastest riders resulted in a third consecutive 450 Class victory for Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., and a first career win for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Dean Wilson, of Scotland.

Dungey, the current 450 Class points leader, carried a four-moto win streak into Budds Creek but had to settle for third in Moto 1 behind Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short, from Smithville, Texas, and Jagermeister KTM's Mike Alessi, from Victorville, Calif., after an early crash. In Moto 2, the Suzuki rider bounced back with a strong start and made the winning move on Short, who captured his second consecutive holeshot on the day, on lap four. His third straight overall victory and fifth win in the last six motos helped Dungey extend his early season points lead.

"I think its half (luck) and half (confidence)," said Dungey, who is a rookie in the premier class. "(The team) has done testing on the bike and we're learning what works and what doesn't. I needed a good start in the second moto and it took me awhile to get going. But once I got out front it was good to be in that position and choose my own lines. When you're behind someone you lose a lot of energy (chasing). These guys don't make it easy on me out there so it really forces me to be on my game."

Short used his first moto win to take the runner-up spot for the second straight week (1-5) while Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chad Reed, of Australia, rebounded from a rough weekend at round three to finish third.

Wilson, a rookie in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, became the fourth different overall winner in four races of the 250 Class. After a fourth place effort in Moto 1, he posted a strong start in Moto 2 and grabbed the lead on lap three, never looking back.

"I just tried to pace myself all day," said Wilson. "If you pushed too hard you were going to get tired (because of the heat). In the second moto, I just wanted to win and I didn't even know I won the overall. I didn't find out until after. I was just trying to get the monkey off my back (after Texas). The fans were awesome out there and the track was really tough but I had a lot of fun out there."

GEICO Powersports Honda's Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., finished second overall (3-2) and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Tyla Rattray, of South Africa, rounded out the podium in third (2-3) one week after claiming his first career win. Class points leader Christophe Pourcel, of France, posted a fourth place result after winning the opening moto.

The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship continues next weekend from Lakewood, Colo., for round five and the Toyota Trucks Thunder Valley National from Thunder Valley Motocross Park on June 26.

Dungey Makes it Two in a Row, Grabs Points Lead at High Point

Tyla Rattray Grabs First Career 250 Class Victory

MT. MORRIS, Pa. (June 12, 2010) - The third round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship endured a mixture of rain and sun on Saturday as the series made its East Coast debut at the Rockstar Energy High Point National Presented by Centra Bank from High Point Raceway. After breaking through for his first 450 Class victory last weekend, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., made it two in a row while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Tyla Rattray, of South Africa, raced to his first career victory in the 250 Class.

Dungey maintained the momentum he garnered last weekend, going 1-1 on the day to establish a four moto win streak. After grabbing the lead early in moto one, he never looked back but was forced to chase down Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, in moto two. Overcoming a multiple-second deficit, he closed in during the closing stages and made the winning pass to lead the final five laps.

"It feels good," said Dungey. "The track turned out better than I thought after the first moto. I got good starts and put us in a good position to be out front. There were a lot of passing lines today. Sometimes you get caught behind someone and have difficulty moving through the pack and that's where starts play a big role."

By virtue of the win, Dungey moved into the 450 Class points lead, surpassing defending champion Chad Reed, of Australia, who suffered from misfortune en route to an 18th-place effort. Short held on for second overall (3-2) while GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe, of Australia, grabbed his first career podium finish in the premier class in third (6-3).

Intermittent rain created difficult track conditions for the 250 Class which once again showcased the depth of talent in the entry level division. GEICO Powersports Honda's Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., captured the first moto victory but found trouble in moto two. Current class points leader Christophe Pourcel, of France, assumed the winning role in the final moto but Rattray's consistent 2-2 moto scores helped him to his inaugural overall victory.

"It feels good," said Rattray. "I've been working for it and to finally get one now really means a lot to me. Being consistent is what it takes to win the championship. It would have been nice to go 1-1 but at least I was consistent. I've been working hard and it feels good to finally get on top of the podium.'

Pourcel took the runner-up spot (4-1) to maintain his points lead while GEICO Powersports Honda's Blake Wharton, of Pilot Point, Texas, posted a career best result in third (8-3).

The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship continues next weekend from Mechanicsville, Md., for round four and the MotoTees.com Budds Creek National from Budds Creek MX Park on June 19.

Young moto star Dungey making most of opportunity

By JOHN MARSHALL (AP) - 3 days ago

Alone in a one-bedroom apartment, nearly 2,000 miles from home, Ryan Dungey struggled as the loneliness and laundry piled up.

Just 16 at the time, he had chosen, with his parents' blessing, to move from Minnesota to California, where his blossoming professional motocross career could get more traction.

Painful as it was at the time, the move turned out to be the best he's ever made.

"It was tough. It's hard every day you've got to get up and do it all yourself, but I knew it was going to get better and better and it has," Dungey said. "It's been more than I ever could have dreamed of, so it was all worth it."

The latest step in Dungey's dream ride comes this weekend in Northern California when the AMA Pro Motocross Championship kicks off its 12-race season at the iconic Hangtown Classic. The 42-year-old event is named after Placerville, a former Gold Rush town where a long-ago local judge was quick with the rope.

Dungey heads into the dirt-bike classic as one of the favorites to bump off defending series champion Chad Reed.

The 20-year-old from Belle Plain, Minn., is coming off one of the best Supercross seasons ever, winning six races to join Jeremy McGrath as the only riders to win the premier division title as a rookie.

He has become a star, the face of the knobby-tired future.

In a way, it's been surprising rise to the top.

Motocross, like most sports in today's have-to-know-now era, identifies its stars early. Dungey, by most accounts, wasn't supposed to be one of them.

He had a good-but-not-great amateur career, enough to get some attention, probably not enough to land a factory ride. At least that's what he - and just about everyone else - thought.

A call from legendary rider and Rockstar Makita Suzuki manager Roger DeCoster changed that.

Dungey grew up around dirt bikes, he and two brothers following the lead of their father, Troy, an amateur rider. The Dungeys enjoyed watching the motocross races when the circuit hit town and Ryan sought out DeCoster to express his interest in riding professionally.

DeCoster, a five-time world champion rider, remembered the enthusiasm Dungey had and kept tabs on him as his amateur career continued.

"I thought the kid was really into it, really serious about learning, had a great attitude and was polite, so he was worth looking at," DeCoster said.

Wanting to get a close-up look at Dungey, DeCoster invited him to California to test ride a race bike. Dungey rode the knobs off, impressing DeCoster with his speed and fitness level.

So, five months after blowing out the candles at his 16th birthday party, Dungey made the rare move of landing a factory ride straight out of the amateur ranks after figuring he'd have to wait at least another year just to turn pro.

"It kind of came up when you least expect it," Dungey said. "I never would have expected it like that, to come about the way it did. It all worked out perfect. It couldn't have been better."

Turns out, Dungey was just getting started with the surprises.

First, though, he had to get through those 10 grueling months on his own. His parents both worked full-time jobs, so they allowed their son to live and train in California, visiting him when they could.

Dungey locked in on riding to get over the loneliness, avoiding the late-night trappings that could be so tantalizing for a 16-year-old on his own. The focus and upgraded equipment started to make a difference.

When Dungey was younger, his family didn't have the resources to go to all the big events or buy the best equipment. There were, after all, three brothers riding at the same time. Once he hooked up with DeCoster, Dungey had the support of a factory, riding top-of-the-line Suzukis.

Also, being in California, he was able to ride year-round for the first time in his life, not forced to visit warm places when the cold hit Minnesota.

Under the guidance of DeCoster and with the help of motocross legend Ricky Carmichael, Dungey made steady progress toward the top, validating his manager's eyebrow-raising decision to sign a less-than-heralded amateur.

"He's very dedicated to what he's doing," DeCoster said. "He has no other distractions. That, and he's followed advice well and maybe a little bit of luck; in sports, you always need a little bit of luck, but most of the time you make your own luck."

Now, Dungey has become a star, one of the biggest names in motocross.

Instead of doing laundry on his own and missing his family, he's surrounded by fans who cheer his name, want his autograph.

Sometimes, it's still hard to believe.

"When I was little, I never really thought I'd be at this stage this early," Dungey said. "I thought it'd be more toward the end of my career, but I'll take it."

Reed Starts 2010 Title Defense with Win at Hangtown Classic

Eli Tomac Captures 250 Class Victory in Professional Debut

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (May 22, 2010) - The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship kicked-off on Saturday with the 42nd Annual Rockstar Energy Hangtown Classic. Regning 450 Class Champion Chad Reed, of Australia, began his title defense with the overall victory in the premier class while GEICO Powersports Honda's Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., grabbed the 250 Class win in his professional debut.

Reed put himself in position to win on Saturday by taking the win in the day's first moto. In moto two, the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider needed to work his way through the field after finding himself deep inside the top 10 after the holeshot. As the final minutes approached, he worked his way into winning position, passing GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe, of Australia, for third, where he remained until the conclusion of the second moto.

"It was a good time (today)," said Reed. "Supercross didn't go the way we wanted it to. With everything that's happened in my life the last two weeks, I think I've spent two days on a bike. So to win so easily in the first moto and get the finish I needed in the second feels great."

Jagermeister KTM's Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., took the runner-up spot (4-1), winning the second moto and giving the brand new KTM 350cc motorcycle its first moto win in its debut. Honda Red Bull Racing's Davi Millsaps, of Murrieta, Calif., grabbed the final podium spot in third, (3-2).

The deeply talented 250 Class' opener was as competitive as expected. A heated battle in moto one presented an opportunity for Tomac to sweep the day's motos, but the rookie fell while leading and finished third. In moto two, a strong start and early attack on the lead put him up front from which he consistently extended his advantage over the field. With the inaugural victory, Tomac became the first rider in the history of the sport to win in his professional debut in either the motocross or supercross disciplines.

"I definitely didn't expect this, it doesn't seem real," exclaimed Tomac. "I felt like I had the speed to get a top five. In moto one, I just pulled the good old rookie mistake. I got tired and just washed out my front end. In moto two, I just followed Trey (Canard) and tried to keep close to him and then made the pass."

Tying Tomac in overall event points was Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel, of France, who won the day's opening moto (1-3). However, by virtue of a tiebreaker, Tomac's better final moto result relegated Pourcel to second. GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., rounded out the overall podium in third (7-2).

In addition to the season premier of both men's classes, the MotorcylceUSA.com Women's Motocross Championship began its 2010 championship. Five-time champion Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., dominated both of the day's motos, sweeping en route to the overall win. Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., finished second (3-2) while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda's Tarah Gieger, of Winter Garden, Fla., captured third (2-6).

The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship continues in two weeks, with round two from Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas and the Flagstar Bank Freestone National on Saturday, June, 5.
